Portrait Sessions

A portrait should reveal something.

After more than twenty five years behind a camera, I have come to believe that the most meaningful portraits are rarely created by imposing an idea upon someone. They begin by paying attention.

To the person.
To the way they move.
To what makes them interesting.
To what is quiet, unexpected, beautiful, strong, vulnerable or entirely their own.

My approach to portraiture has changed over the years, but that belief has become increasingly important to me. I am less interested in creating photographs that look like everyone else's and far more interested in creating photographs that could only belong to the person standing before my camera.

Sometimes that means a carefully considered portrait built with light and intention. Sometimes it means movement, an unusual location or something more expressive. And sometimes the photograph happens in the fraction of a second when someone simply forgets about the camera.

The work shown here spans different periods of my career, different people and very different approaches. That is intentional. There is no single formula because there has never been a single kind of person.

A Limited Number of Portraits

My portrait work is intentionally limited to a small number of sessions each year. I work with individuals, couples and families who are drawn to a more personal, thoughtful approach to portraiture, work shaped around who they are rather than a predetermined formula. Each session begins with conversation, allowing us to consider what matters, what feels natural, and what kind of photographs would be most meaningful to create.

We begin with a conversation rather than a package. I want to know who you are, what brought you to this kind of portraiture, and what you hope these photographs might mean years from now.​ From there, we decide together what the session should become.

Sessions are relaxed, unhurried and shaped around the person rather than a predetermined formula.

Portrait sessions begin at $500.

More involved or specially conceived portrait work is quoted individually.
